New blog for Parents with Disabilities

Through the Looking Glass (TLG) is pleased to begin its first blogging effort to connect with our community.

TLG is a nationally recognized center that has pioneered research, training, and services for families in which a child, parent or grandparent has a disability or medical issue. TLG is a disability community based nonprofit organization, which emerged from the independent living movement, and was founded in 1982 in Berkeley, California.

Our mission is "To create, demonstrate and encourage non-pathological and empowering resources and model early intervention services for families with disability issues in parent or child which integrate expertise derived from personal disability experience and disability culture."

  1. Hello All,
I am very excited about this site. I am a single mother of 4. I have a late onset disability. I have a rare form of MD. I have a trach and I use a ventilator. I use a power chair to get around. I can walk a little, if that's what you want to call it,lol. I have been living with my mother for the last four years and in a couple of months, my kids and I will be moving out. I am happy and afraid at the same time. I hope that the move will go smoothly. I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

  6. Are there any special programs in your area for children with parents with disabilities? I wanted to start something in my area like that, but I need ideas.

  7. I wish there was a local TLG in Southern California. I could really use the resources. I currently work with individuals with disabilities but as a single mom with three disabilities I could use more resources.

  8. I have cerebral palsy and am 7 months pregnant with my first child. I think I am going to need help at home to physically care for my baby while my husband is at work. I do not qualify for Disability so I assume I don't qualify for any sort of government help in terms of getting assistance in the home. Hiring a nanny for 8 hrs a day or more is not financially do-able for us. Do you have any suggestions on how or where I could look for help in this area? Any organizations I might contact? I don't even know where to begin.

  9. Please give Judi Rogers at our office a call. Our number is 800-644-2666. She is a pregnancy and birthing expert. She has CP and two adult children. Judi is extremely knowledgeable about adaptive parenting equipment that will make it easier for you to care for your baby. She may also know some resources in your city. You may also want to click on the link on the left to go to our online bookstore. We have a book on adaptive parenting equipment and pregnancy and birthing which was authored by Judi. Congratulations on your new baby.

  12. Hello Everyone,

I am currently a Physical Therapy grad student and I am doing a project on parenting with a disability. By doing this project my group members and I would like to educate our classmates on the challenges that parents with a disability are faced with everyday and how they have learned to adapt and overcome these obstacles. We truly believe that any information that we gather from this project will help us be better and more efficient future Physical Therapists. Please, if there is anyone that is willing or can direct me to someone who is willing to answer a few questions for me via phone or email, it would be greatly appreciated!

  13. Hello To All.
My name is Jennifer, I was in a car accident last year in May that has left me paralyzed from the waist down. I was five months pregnant at the time of the accident, and by God's grace my son was born on October 3, 2008. We just celebrated his one year birthday last weekend. I have had to overcome many obstacles as a disabled parent and am looking for any helpful resources as well as provide what I can for anyone who needs information or help. I am looking forward to seeing how this blog works.

  14. Hello!
I am extreemly happy to see your site and this blog! I am a 44 year old mom of two glorious girls that are 5 and 6 years old. I am married and I have had Parkinson's disease for the last 9 years. My children are well adjusted, chipper and sweet with big hearts and minds. The love to laugh and to learn. We have always talked openly about the illness, and about most other issues. My older daughter is facing issues in her school and she has asked my help in solving it. I wonder if anyone might offer guidance? My 6 year old claims that the kids on her bus tease her and make fun of her mom because her mom shakes. They say her mom is faking and she is a penguin and can't do anything and generally just call her mom derogatory names. I have emailed the principal and will set up a meeting to brainstorm ways to help. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you very much.

  15. Hello ! I wonder if there is a local group for THE CHILDREN OF parents with disabilities or the parents themselves in central New Jersey?
If not, I'd like to start one. What does starting such a group entail? Is there any guidance?
    Thank you very much.

  18. Hello - I was really happy to find this blog. I am single, 46, with a chronic illness exploring ways to have a child via foster (most likely) or adoption. As I am just beginning, I would be interested in speaking with anyone else who has gone this route with a disability. One of my concerns as I try to map out a plan is that I know I will need at least a couple of hours of nanny/babysitting support per day but am not sure how to afford out. Ideas are welcome.
